Our Start
In 2015, I drove two women to El Lindero de La Petaca to vet an applicant for a Jovenes Adelante Scholarship. Ceci was so very poor that the 3 of us knew she needed help and the chance for a better life. She got the scholarship and went to Nursing School in Celaya. She graduated after 4 years and celebrated with chocolate cake and her family.
Unfortunately, Covid struck and Ceci was assigned to the Covid ward in Celaya. After four months, all the dying drove Ceci out of the hospital and she never finished her public service year. When I met Ceci, I was curious to meet the person who had told her and pushed her to apply for a scholarship. That person was Emma Guerra, a teacher in the campo. Emma started showing me what could be accomplished in rural schools – internet, computers, gardens, volunteer teaching, special events, etc. and I began my work with rural schools.
